Schools Programme

Maniac Basketball (UK) was set up in 1994 by Coach Doe Williams when he saw a need for independent Basketball coaching in England. In particular it was aimed at teenage boys who didn’t quite fit the mould of some of the larger clubs.  During the 4 years that Maniac was running the club teams achieved great success in both England and in Europe, and was widely recognised as a good breeding ground for the professional teams in England. 

Coach Doe immigrated to New Zealand in 1998 and brought his philosophy, ideas and coaching techniques along with his company, Maniac Basketball. Since arriving he has directed 30 Basketball Camps, coached at 51 Primary, Intermediate and Senior schools, won Championships at almost every level with each age group and squeezed in the odd bit of time to give motivational talks to numerous audiences.

In addition Coach Doe has been based at Rutherford College to promote and develop their Basketball teams with excellent results that can be seen below. The overall philosophy is tailored towards the importance of education first and Basketball second. This is designed to produce well balanced individuals in both sports and education. Coach Doe attempts to shape the player’s attitudes to both Basketball and academics through attention to detail, team work and being honest with both themselves and each other about their goals.

The Schools programme has many different facets which include:

Introduction of Basketball and its rules - which includes basic fundamental basketball skills and introduction of the different rules

Team coaching - which includes team tactics, offensive strategies, defensive tactics, and preparation for School Tournaments

Mentoring through Basketball - using Basketball as a vehicle in helping to teach life skills.  Maniac Basketball has worked with numbers of 'at risk' youth and RTLB units with positive results.  Please contact Coach Doe for further details or references.
